How to Cook White Fish

Our brand new white fish competition has inspired us to write about how versatile a seafood it is. Have a read of just some of the ways you could cook up the prizes in our giveaway and head to the store if you want some immediately!

On the Hob

Any white fish can be cooked on the hob. A simple shallow-frying method has codhaddock or any other variety ready in minutes. Just grab a non-stick pan, add a little bit of oil and cook your fish through. This method is ideal for when you want a tasty but quick fish dish, and when the flesh tears a bit during frying, you get some delicious crispy bits on your plate too!

If you want to add a little extra punch to your meal, try glazing your white fish or giving it a spicy batter. 

Baking

Another way of cooking your white fish that isn’t time-consuming is baking it in the oven. This one’s great for any of you that love the taste of white fish but have an aversion to the scent of seafood! The flesh of white fish doesn’t contain as much fat as other varieties so make sure you don’t overcook it. Try adding some water into your dish and don’t forget some vegetables and spices to add more depth to the bake.

Steaming

Put a large pan on the hob, pour in some water, peppercorns, salt, lemon and ginger, and bring the contents to a boil. Lower the heat, add your fish and bring to a boil again. Cut the heat and let your fish steam for around 10 minutes. When you spoon it out, add some butter and your choice of seasonings for a simple steamed fish.

Roasting

Oven roasting your white fish gives it a great crispy skin and moist inner texture. Melt some butter on a baking tray and add some spices to it. We recommend parsley, thyme or if you want it hot, try some cayenne pepper flakes and garlic. Place your fish in the mix and turn once while roasting. You can even pour the remaining butter over the fish when it’s plated! Alternatively, try using our compound butter that’s packed full of sharp flavours.

The flavours that can be achieved are endless—white fish soak up just about any spice or seasoning. Not only that, you can be creative with your sides and how you incorporate your white fish into a meal. Ensure your white fish is completely cooked through and try it in rice or lentil dishes, pasta, salad or even on barbecue skewers.
